Crafty Creations 6: Baby Bibs

This project is very easy. All you need is some material with baby patterns on it. (I mixed and matched to make them reversable). Make great baby shower gifts.

Materials:
Baby patterned flannel (fat folds work great) (enough of one or 2 patterns for a front and back)
bib pattern (I found one on-line that I could print off)
Thread

Directions
Cut out printed bib patterned
Trace pattern on back of flannel matterial (w/ a pencil)
Cut along bib outline on both pieces of flannel
Place flannel bib cut outs front side toward each other and sew along the edge leaving a small opening.
Turn bibs inside out though openening so proper side of material is showing.
Hand sew opening in bib closed.
Add velcro or snap to handles of bib (I made my handles a little longer to be able to just tie them in the back)

Crafty Creations 7: Rag Quilt

I am always cold (it doesn't matter how hot it is) so I always have a blanket on hand. This blanket is nice to have since it is not too big and bulky (so it doesn't get too hot during the summer, yet just right for during the winter also). It also makes a great couch decoration to break up the solid color of the couch. I made this blanket about 3 years ago and it has held up very nicely with its many uses and washing's.

Materials:
Flannel Fat Folds (6 patterns, 2 of each pattern) (more or less depending on how big you want it)
Scissors
Fabric cutter and mat
Thread
Sewing machine (do not recommend hand sewing this blanket)

Directions:
Wash all fabric fat folds
Cut 4 squares from each fat fold (recommend using fabric cutter and mat to cut so all squares are the same size)
Place 2 square pieces (of same pattern) together with backs of material facing each other.
Layout each double square into a pattern on table to place together the blanket (this way you can plan out the placement of the squares to avoid same pattern or colors next to each other)
Place 2 doubled squares together
Sew along each side. (will sew these together so that the rough edge is to one side) (want this to be showing when done) (see picture)
Sew together one row (continue until all rows are complete)
Sew together completed row together (making sure all the sewn edges are on same side of blanket)
Once all rows are sewn together sew around the outer edge of the blanket to hold the pieces together.
Cut along each edge (including the edges in the middle of blanket) about 1/2 inch apart.
Wash  the blanket once cutting is complete to give it a raggedy look to it.

Summer is almost over!

Since my last post not a whole lot has happened, or at least it doesn't seem like a  lot to me.

  • I watched my 9 month old nephew for a week while my sister took Aubrey and Sierra to Lake Powell and Lagoon.
  • I got my patio table cushions recovered now I just need to paint the table.
  • We took Aubrey to San Francisco for a week for our summer vacation. (photos to come soon, took over 2000 pictures so there are a lot to go through)
  • We were going to try to get our passports to go to Canada this summer but with the new house and the cost to get one for all of us we decided to wait till I either get a teaching job or am subbing on a regular basis this next school year and go next summer.
  • I narrowed it down to just a few pics to chose from to enter in the fair this year then I went on vacation and took more pictures that I like so now I have to decide all over again. I have a few days to decide what I am going to do.
Well that is pretty much all that has happened in the last few weeks for us. I am hoping this next month stays pretty busy and I get some interviews for jobs in the area that will lead to a job this school year.

Stay tuned... more to come!!

My next goal/project!!

So I have been trying to decide what goal I should start working on next. It is summer and I have a little more time on my hands. So this is what I am hoping to do in the next month or two, before school starts and I will hopefully have a teaching job or at least be staying busy subbing  (keeping my fingers crossed).

Project 1: Recover the cushions on my patio chairs and repaint the table and chairs. (Goal 17)
Its not that I don't like my table and chairs, they were giving to me by someone who had them in their shed for years and never opened them (can't beat something free) but they aren't my style. And my husband doesn't like flower patterns. So I thought I would try recovering the cushions and painting the metal to more match us and what we like. We will see how they turn out.

Project 2: Create a Calander (Goal 25)
I want to pull together some of my scenic pictures from different months of the year (1 from each month of places in Idaho) and put together a calendar. I have enough pictures to do it, its just sitting down and doing it. I also want to do this for diffrent places I have been through out the US and Mexico (and hopefully Canada this summer, Goal 42 and 44).

Project 3: Decorate Aubrey's room. (Goal 10)
She has been asking me for a few years now if we could re-paint her room from how we had it as her baby room. Instead of re-painting her room we baught a new house. However now her walls are a light brown and she wants to decorate them to match her bedding. Brown is too boring for her appearntly, she must take after her mother. So she picked out some paint colors and now wants to paint big flowers on her walls. Her idea is actually pretty cute. I have quite a creative 7 year old.

Project 4: Finish some old projects I started years ago that I have yet to finish (Goal 17 & 22)
This is includes a Creative Tile Tray (see Crafty Creations link for directions), a quilt for my living room, and a baby blanket I started to knit when I was pregnant (thats going on 8 years now)

So I think this will give me plenty to do while I am sitting around waiting for a job and school to start. Lets see if I can actually get them done (or at least a couple of them done and the others started).

My new house

So for the last few years we had gone back and forth about getting a new house.  And if we got a new house if we should sell our house in Kuna or rent it out. I was scared about having two house payments if we had to go a period of time with no renters or if they just didn't pay. Also terrified of someone else living in my house that I had lived in for several years, we were there 9 years. After trying to sell it a couple of times we decided that we would rent it, since we can ask for more than what the house payment is, Thankfully!! I know a few people that have larger house payments than they can get for rent, I didn't want to be in that same boat.
Our Home!!

Over the last year or so we found a few houses that we really liked and made offers on them. But something always went wrong: wouldn't accept any of our offers, inspection issues, appraisal came in to low.. you get the idea. Well after this happening several times I was ready to give up and just stay in the house we had. I liked the area, Aubrey was at an awesome school (would love to get a teaching job there) neighbors were great, etc.
Living room
our furniture doesn't look so huge and out of place now

Well after I decided I was done looking, I was tired of getting my hopes up and then it not happening, our awesome real-estate agent sent us yet another listing, it was a short sale - big red flag went up, ya it was a great price but what was wrong with it and how much money would we have to put into before we could live in it, I have seen and heard stories about how bad short sale, REO and foreclosed homes can be, I didn't want to have to deal with that. But I agreed to go look at it. And I fell in love with it after seeing it just once. It was my favorite house out of all the ones we looked at, even the ones we made previous offers on. And since it was a short sale the price was even better (little less stressed about 2 house payments, especially since I am not working yet). Even better... it was move in ready, we didn't need to do anything (other than put in a fence for the dog).
Sitting room/reading room

My husband even surprised me with it. He made an offer on it and told me after it was accepted and he knew we would be closing on it that we bought it, thankfully,  cause if I don't think I could have handled another let down. And it even only took 2 months to close on, not the 6 months we were told it normally takes. every thing was working out great for this house, it is in a nice neighbor hood, really nice neighbors, and it is only 5 minutes from my husbands work instead of 20. Lets just say this house was meant to be ours. Every thing happens for a reason right? ABSOLUTELY!@!@!
Office

So we closed at the beginning of May, found a really nice family to rent out our house, talk about weird feeling handing over the keys to your house to people you don't know and leaving them in your house with out you. After 2 months of being in the new house it is finally coming together and feeling like home and that we aren't in the wrong place. (I will admit that when I was headed home there were several times I started to go to the Kuna house.. lol).
Even enough wall space in the office
to hang both of our diplomas

I love this house, and am thrilled to be here. Next project we are doing (besides the fence for the dog, poor thing has to be tied up right now when we put her out because I am terrified she will run away not thinking that this is her home now. she is a funny dog, she will only go potty at her house even when we are gone for a few days she will hold it till she gets home. she didn't go potty for about a week before she realized we weren't going back to the old house. So glad she got over that pretty fast Yes we actually would take her with us when we went back to the other house before the renters moved in so she could go potty cause I was worried she would get sick since she would go at the new house.)
kitchen

Well anyway.. my next project is to decorate Aubrey's room and make it a fun little/big girl room instead of the baby room she still had at the other house, because I kept putting off re-painting it for her. She is very excited to get tohelp me decide what we are going to do in it and actually help do it since it is her room.

Crafty Creations 2: Creative Tile Coasters and Tray

When I worked at Craft Warehouse (many years ago) I did a class every Saturday doing these Creative Tiles. Creative Tile Coasters and Trays are probably the easiest to make. They are A LOT of work but very worth the process. It has been a while since I have done one. They make great house decorations and gifts. And you can actually use them as coasters and trays.

to get antiqued look on box after base paint dries use antique gel  (brown or black) and swipe across box using paper towel or gauze (not recommended to use paint brushes). for antique look on coaster after cut paper to correct size  use an antique stamp ink pad to rub in areas and around edges of paper prior to adhering to coaster. flowers on box are cut out from matching scrapbook paper to the paper used on the coasters with an antique brass brad through the center, using same process as the coaster paper for antique look.
Materials needed:
Unfinished wood coaster set
Unfinished wood tray
Sand paper
Moistened gauze (cant remember what it is called, its been a while since I have gotten it)
EnviroTex Lite pour-on high gloss finish
scrapbook paper and embellishments
acrylic paint
lighter (with a long nose)
craft glue (that is spreadable and scrapbook safe)
sponge paint brushes
plastic cups (disposable)
plastic measuring cup (that can be thrown away)
wood craft sticks

to get sponged look on tray and coaster box after paint dried on both dip the gauze in white paint and dab it on box. flower in tray is a white silk daisy with a yellow button glued on in the middle. white flowers on the box are cut out from matching scrapbook paper to the papers used in the tray and on coasters. tray and coasters have matching paper but are not the same paper.

directions:
* lightly sand unfinished wood pieces with sand paper
* using gauze wipe off any dust on wood pieces
* paint all surfaces of wood that will be seen. (can paint all surfaces if that is easier) let dry completely
* cut scrapbook paper to size of area you are going to be covering with the paper (top of coasters &/or inside of tray)
* using sponge paint brush apply glue to entire area that will be covered with paper. immediately put paper on glued area before glue dries.
* apply embellishments to tray (not recommended to put on coasters if you are going to actually use them as coasters and not decorations)
* after coasters and tray are decorated and completely dry prop up on plastic cups  that are placed upside down. one cup for each coaster and 2 cups for tray (make sure to use cups you plan on throwing away)
* mix the two liquids of the EnviroTex together in the plastic measuring cup. Mix equal parts. stir together with wood craft stick. stir together according to directions on box.
* poor the mixture over the coasters and in tray.
* using a wood craft stick spread the mix over the coasters and tray. (there will be a lot of bubbles, you will get rid of them soon)
* once the mix is spread out use a stick to scrape the bottom of the coasters to prevent build up on the underside. this step is not necessary for the tray
* with the lighter run the flame over the top of the coaster and tray. avoid holding to close to item or in one spot to long to avoid dark spots.
* continue last 2 steps until the air bubbles are gone and stops dripping on sides to underside of coaster.
* once air bubbles are gone and no longer dripping on sides cover with box to keep dust from settling on items. (recommend doing this project in a place where you can leave them to sit 24 hours with out moving or being disturbed)
* let sit covered for 24 hours. then enjoy using them or decorating your home with them.

This project is easy & fun to do. It is great for special memories that you want to scrapbook, or as gifts. This is an awesome way to share your memories with loved ones!
Materials needed:
2-4 lunch size paper bags
Scrapbook paper

* Fold the stack of bags in half, hole punch the folded edge 2-5 times to bind together when finished.
* Cut scrapbook paper to fit paper bag size, cut/tear paper to different sizes (see picture below). Use stamps and ink to decorate paper. When ink is dry glue adhere to paper bag.

I am back.. Hopefully!!!

Well it has been a while since I have been on here. A lot has happened since the last time I posted anything.
*I worked with Kindergartens doing kindergarten interverntion for about 4 months at a school in Kuna. I also worked with 1st and 3rd grades doing Progress Monitoring for the IRI (for those who are not aware of what the IRI is.. it is the Idaho Reading Indicator, a test that students take in grades K-3 to test their reading fluency. I worked with them to practice their fluency to get ready for the test.)
*I subbed for the last 2 weeks of school for a friend of mine at the same school in one of the kindergarten classes I worked with. I LOVED IT!!! I can honestly say I did not make a mistake in finally getting my degree in what I have always wanted to do. I am looking forward to actually having a class of my own here soon. Hoping that I will be able to find a teaching job this coming school year. Otherwise I will be subbing until I do.
*We bought a new house in Meridian and started renting out our house in Kuna.
*Aubrey was moved up in her gymnastics, so she is now going more days for longer periods of time.
*Aubrey ran the Capital Classic again this year. Her 3rd year running and she loves more each time. Her time this year was 11:08 (more than 2 mins faster than last year) and she got 231/639 girls. She runs it each year with her aunt. I was told this year I could not run it with them so I watched my nephew while they ran it
*I have been taking some pictures when we have gone to the parks and out for walks. This includes family pictures for my cousin and his family.
So we have been staying pretty busy so far. Now that summer is here we have been spending a lot of time outside enjoying this beautiful weather that we have finally gotten.

So this is our last 3 months summed up for you. Will be back soon.

Cooking!

I have always loved to help out in the kitchen. I love finding new recipes to use and changing old ones. But recently I have wanted to cook quit a bit more than I have in the past. The other day I had a craving for pretzels, and not the hard little stale tasting ones that you get in a big bag at the store and can never finish before they really do go stale. I wanted one of the old Costco ones or the Mall ones. But I couldnt very well go to get one at 9 o'clock at night, so I made some from scratch. They turned out pretty good actually, 1st time I have ever even tried to make them.
Well tonight was no different. I wanted to make something for dinner besides the same thing we always have. So I decided I would try something that my family loves but have never actually made. I made Creamy Chicken Pot Pie, from scratch. It actually turned out really good. Both my husband and daughter LOVED it!!!
I might actually have to make time to do this more often! I have posted the recipes I used on the recipes page of my blog. Enjoy them if you decide you want to try them out.... If I keep going like this there will be more recipes on there to try. :)

1st Goal Completed!!!

After several years of going to school and working (during some of that time) and having a family, I finally finished in December of 2010. My graduation day was one of the biggest days of my life. I worked hard to get my degree. Without the support and love of my family and friens I don't think I would have ever gotten through it. I was blessed durring this time by meeting serval new life time friends that I have something in common with: the importance of education of our children. Today I was able to cross off the 1st goal on my list of 75 goals in 930 days. After receiving my degree in Elementary Education I recieved my Idaho Teaching Certificate in Standard Elementary K/8 (all subjects). It is amazing how 2 little pieces of paper can mean so much to someone!!! I am so excited to start my teaching career.. Now its time to start looking for a job and turning in those application.

Wanna feel smart?!?

I received these in an email the other day. I got a good laugh at them, so I thought I would share them with you. After reading some of them you have to wonder how some people got to where they are today!

1) "Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life,"
-- Brooke Shields, during an interview to become spokesperson for federal anti-smoking campaign

2) "I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body,"
--Winston Bennett, University of Kentucky basketball forward.

3) "That lowdown scoundrel deserves to be kicked to death by a jackass, and I'm just the one to do it,"
--A congressional candidate in Texas .

4) "Half this game is ninety percent mental."
--Philadelphia Phillies manager, Dan ny Ozark

5) "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment.. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.."
--Al Gore, Vice President

6) "We don't necessarily discriminate. We simply exclude certain types of people."
-- Colonel Gerald Wellman, ROTC Instructor.

1st Week!!!

Well I made it through the first week, and I still LOVE it. This week I start working with 1st and 3rd graders doing progress monitoring. Now I am trying to come up with new ways to drill letter names and sounds with students. I am trying to come up with fun games and things to do with them. I have some ideas to do, I am just needing to figure out how to skim them down to fit into a 15 min time slot. It has been great coming up with ideas to do and seeing their faces light at learning new things.

First Day!!!

I love teaching!!!! My 1st day was great, (I was there Friday but I didn't work with any students, so I am not counting that) working with kids is wonderful. I love that they are so eager to learn and try new things. You are probably wondering what my new job actually is, right?
After subbing a couple of days at a school, I got a call from the principal saying the school was looking for someone to do Kindergarten Intervention and she wanted to meet with me for an interview if I was interested. Well I couldn't pass up the opportunity. While I loved subbing, and am still able to do that on Fridays, I really like working with the same kiddos everyday and making my own lesson plans instead of having to teach what someone else wants me to. While this is only a temporary position I think it will be beneficial to me and the students.
So long story short, after meeting with the principal for about 20 mins, I left the school with the job offer. So now I work with Kindergartners, teaching letter names and sounds, and do progress monitoring for Kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grades. After working with the students today I am excited to continue working with them and I can not wait to have a classroom of my own eventually. Praying that will happen this next school year. More to come as the year continues!!!!

Saturday, February 5, 2011

Hello!!!

Several of my friends have been doing blogs to journal about what is happening in their lives. I thought "What a wonderful thing to do as I start my teaching career." This will be a great way to keep my friends and family current on what is happening with me and my beautiful daughter as we go through school and teaching, and the many other fun things we do together. So here goes:
I just graduated in December from Boise State University with my Elementary Education degree. I am so excited to start my career as a teacher. Since graduating I have been subbing in the district for various grades and teachers. I have to admit while I was scared to death to do my student teaching in Kindergarten, it is now my absolute favorite grade to teach. I did my student teaching in the 6th grade and Kindergarten. After subbing at one of the schools here I was offered a position (I will get into that in a future blog after the job starts). After having several varieties of jobs since I graduated High School, I feel I have definitely chosen the right career for me, it may have taken a while to get here, but I am so glad I am finally here.
So now about my family. I have a beautiful daughter. She says some of the funniest things. I will post some of her antics as we go. I have been so blessed to have her in my life. I cant imagine not having her around. She makes me laugh so much, it is hard not to smile when she is around. I will also keep post on her progress in school. She is currently a 1st grader and would rather be at school learning than anywhere else, which is unusual. She is also in gymnastics. She has been doing gymnastics for about 4 years. I am amazed at what their little bodies can do. I love watching her practice and get better at this.
A little more about me now. I have been married for 8 1/2 years. We live in the Treasure Valley area. It has been a wonderful experience. We have been very blessed with our lives, and the things we have been able to do as a family. We hope to expand out little family eventually, after I get settled into my new career.
Well that is a little about me and what we have been up to. I look forward to keeping journals about what we have been up and the new things that are happening in our lives.
